Hosting a Thumb Mesh Repeater Frequently Asked Questions

So you want to be one of the heroes of the mesh whose lofty location can help us fling messages further across the thumb? You probably have questions. Here are answers to some common ones.

  1. What kind of equipment will be installed?
    The equipment that relays messages across the thumb is called a repeater. A repeater is typically a small, weatherproof box containing a radio circuit, battery, a lightweight antenna and a solar panel. Usually under 2 pounds and compact (roughly the size of an internet router, but the antenna is slightly longer). We have a standard build that we deploy, to keep costs down, but we build them ourselves and as such can customize the repeater if necessary for compatibility with the site.

  2. Will a repeater increase my power or internet bill or usage?
    Repeaters are solar-powered and self-sufficient. They do not require and will not use your internet access. They therefore have no cost to the site owner.

  3. What kind of antenna or cabling will be involved?
    Usually a small antenna is attached directly to the repeater. In some cases, a small external antenna may be mounted on a mast or pole to improve coverage. No cabling enters the building.

    Typical installations use industrial magnets, U-bolts around a mast or pole, or pipe clamps. No drilling or permanent modifications are required unless agreed upon in advance.

  4. What is the expected maintenance requirement?
    Very little. Repeaters are designed to operate autonomously for long periods. Occasional visits, typically once or twice a year, may be needed for firmware updates, battery replacement, or general hardware inspection.

    Access arrangements can be agreed upon in advance.

  5. What range and signal coverage will this repeater support?
    Coverage depends primarily on antenna height and surrounding terrain. Typical coverage ranges from several miles to well over ten miles, with much greater distances possible from elevated locations.

    The repeater helps extend communication by automatically relaying messages through other repeaters in the network.

    It operates in the license-free 902–928 MHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) radio band.

    One advantage of having a repeater at your site is that you will likely have excellent signal anywhere on your property.

  6. Will the equipment cause any interference with my existing systems?
    Interference is extremely unlikely. Thumb Mesh operates on different frequencies than Wi-Fi, cellular networks, television, and most other consumer electronics while transmitting at relatively low power.

    The equipment is designed to comply with applicable FCC regulations. Documentation can be provided if requested.

  7. Are there any permits, zoning, or regulatory issues to be aware of?
    Small, non-commercial radio installations generally do not require permits.

    Because installations normally require no drilling or permanent alterations, they can usually be removed without leaving damage.

    If you rent your property, we can work directly with your property owwner.

  8. Will this use the building's power or increase the likelihood my property is struck by lightning?
    No. Repeaters are solar powered and operate independently of your building's electrical system.

    Using a completely self-contained solar power system also avoids connecting the equipment to your household wiring.

    There is no evidence that the installation increases the likelihood of a lightning strike.

  9. How long is the repeater expected to stay there? Can it be removed at any time?
    That is entirely up to you. We can agree on whatever timeframe works best, with no long-term obligation.

    You may request removal at any time, allowing reasonable notice to arrange access.

    The goal is for removal to leave no permanent marks or damage.

  10. Who else hosts Thumb Mesh repeaters?
    Thumb mesh is hosted by several businesses, residences, public service agencies, and organizations. A list of examples will be here soon, pending site owner approval.
